April 15, 2026 – As power grids grow more complex and the demand for reliable, clean energy increases, engineers around the world face a clear challenge: how to modernize energy systems without disrupting the operations that depend on them.
Leyden Power’s Chief of Technology, Ir. Jimmy Zhu, addressed the topic at Power Tomorrow, a joint webinar hosted by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). The seminar brings together engineers and industry practitioners to explore global innovations in energy engineering.
The session opened with an overview of Hong Kong’s energy storage market. With growing government support, the region has become one of the fastest adopters of large-scale energy storage. Hong Kong’s installed BESS capacity tripled between 2020 and 2023, reaching 80MWh. The figure reflects not just growth, but a genuine shift in how the city approaches energy infrastructure.
The focus then shifted to practical applications: how energy storage systems perform in real-world and what engineers need to consider when specifying or deploying them. The right storage infrastructure supports grid stability, enables renewable integration, and keeps critical operations running when conditions change. Cases from Leyden Power were referenced, ranging from powering grid-less construction sites and port operations to supporting outdoor events across Hong Kong and the broader Asia-Pacific region.
Ir. Jimmy Zhu closed the session on an optimistic note, looking ahead to where the industry is heading. Notable local projects, such as the Virtual Power Plant (VPP) development and battery-to-grid (B2G) approach, stand to redefine how distributed energy assets interact with the broader grid.

Events like Power Tomorrow matter because today’s energy challenges cannot be solved by any single organization. Instead, they require shared knowledge, candid technical exchange, and a willingness to learn across disciplines. We look forward to continuing that dialogue and working with Hong Kong’s active, ambitious, and increasingly connected energy engineering community.
