Leyden Power Expands the Lamma Power Station with Batteries

Deployment Date: January 2026
Project Location: Lamma Island, Hong Kong S.A.R.

The Lamma Power Station, one of Hong Kong’s longest running generation sites, is being expanded without a single generator on-site.

The Lamma Power Station has supplied Hong Kong since 1982, when its first coal-fired unit came online. Over four decades, the station has shifted steadily toward gas, growing to more than 3,000 MW of installed capacity along the way.

As a primary generation site, the station has undergone continuous development to meet growing electricity demand and Hong Kong’s energy objectives to phase-out coal usage. Each expansion has moved the station along that path. The current expansion, led by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) extends that record.

Building on the island carries real constraints. Grid power is limited, and Hong Kong summers brings long stretches of heat and heavy humidity that push equipment hard. Diesel generators that are sized for the peak run inefficiently when power demand fluctuates, a typical scenario in construction.

Choosing to use generators for the site would require them to run 12 hours a day, just to support the grid through the power swings. The option brings its own costs: noise, fumes, and extra logistics. CHEC is set out to remove that dependency entirely.

What we achieved

To boost available grid power, the team deployed the NAVY CUBE 400 battery energy storage system (BESS), rated at 400 kW and 633 kWh. The CUBE is set to power a tower crane (peaks at 98 kW) and site lighting, charging through a 50-kW grid connection.

Sitting between the grid and the load, the CUBE protects the grid from the repeated stress fluctuating construction loads usually cause. Limited grid input is amplified, giving power that continually adjusts to the crane’s draw. The result is a full coverage of the 98-kW peak load without a diesel unit running on site, less operation and maintenance expenses required.

In July 2026, the CUBE delivered 1,875 kWh to the site while cutting carbon emission by 93 percent compared with the diesel setup it replaced. One grid charging, zero generator hours, and a battery doing the balancing in between.

Data based on one month use (July 2026)

Lamma Power Station’s expansion site demonstrates a working model for how constrained, high-demand sites can run on clean energy. As Hong Kong’s construction and energy sectors work toward the city’s climate targets, fewer generators on sites like Lamma serves as a measurable piece of that shift.
